Description

This object is a barred spiral galaxy located 60 million light years away in the constellation of Eridanus at a declination of -3 degrees. This galaxy spans 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 60,000 light years. We are viewing it about halfway between edge-on and face-on.

This galaxy disk has a fascinating structure. Ignoring the outer disk region, the galaxy looks like a barred grand design spiral galaxy with 2 strong arms, one departing each end of the bar. But these bars only extend about 45 degrees and then the bright sections terminate. The outer disk is diffuse in the lower right side, but on the upper left side it has a series of concentric branches. These branches appear to originate loosely from the bright bar extension on the lower right side. The end result is that the galaxy core has been shifted a bit lower and right of center.

It seems that a small companion, or some other passing galaxy, may have created this disturbed disk appearance.
